NASCAR Q&A with Richard Petty

More than 20 years after his retirement, Richard Petty remains NASCAR’s most accomplished driver. His record of 200 wins is unlikely to be surpassed. (Jeff Gordon is tops among active drivers with 88.) Petty and Dale Earnhardt are the only drivers to earn seven championships; Jimmie Johnson has six.
Petty’s team, which has four wins in the past five seasons, was in financial turmoil a couple of years ago but now seems solidified with new investors. Petty recently extended or added sponsorships with Smithfield Foods, Stanley, the Air Force, STP and Fresh From Florida. Drivers Aric Almirola and Marcos Ambrose will start ninth and 29th, respectively, Sunday at Phoenix International Raceway. Petty wrote the forward for PIR’s 50th anniversary book: “Phoenix At 50: A Half-Century of Racing.” Petty, 76, talked with azcentral sports before The Profit on CNBC 500. His answers were edited for length and clarity.
