Phoenix International Raceway to be testing track for new NASCAR scoring system

Phoenix International Raceway fans will be the first to see if NASCAR’s major rules changes — an attempt to increase competition and entertainment plus add “Game 7” drama to its championship — will be a winner or a wreck.
A new group qualifying format, replacing the traditional single-car method, will debut at PIR Feb. 28 ahead of the March 2 The Profit on CNBC 500. So will technical modifications to the much-hyped Generation-6 car, successful last year in more visually identifying with showroom models, but it didn’t produce as much side-by-side racing as hoped.
